For your info, I sent this email to the missing children's section at Scotland Yard:

Dear Crystal

Thanks for your email. I have forwarded it to the officer in the case as it is her decision as to whether you should continue.

Please can you tell me if Jade Merritt has been found safe. I am working with a forum that helps spread awareness of missing children and she has been taken off of your pages and we would like to know whether she has been located or not.

Many thanks

Crystal

"Our decision as to whether we should continue" - that sounds to me like they know where she is but haven't been able to get her home yet? When I have a reply from them, I will let you know.

Thanks for pursuing the information regarding Jade. It might be a case similar to Sammy Osborn - found but not home.

I have had some emails from the police regarding this girl and it seems that she has not been located, though the police did not confirm this, they have said that the family are interested in any help that people can give with regards to raising awareness of Jade.

I have passed the police teams details onto admin who are going to see if we can help at all with this.

will keep you updated.

Just to let you know that I am in contact with Jade's mum and she has asked me to update you.

Jade is in an exploitative relationship with a man from Bristol, she is thought to be in either Bristol or London and is considered to be in danger.

Jade's family are getting support from CROP (the coallition for the removal of pimping).

Bristol seems to spring up quite a lot doesn't it? Was that not where Sammy was too?

Jade phoned home on Wednesday, scared and hungry.

Social workers had promised the family that they would act to protect her if she was found, sadly when the police got to her the social workers had not left a handover on their computer for the out of hours team.
As a result the police had to let Jade go, presumably back into the hands of the pimp who has been controlling her since December.

Her family are obviously distraught.

I have this message given to me on good authority. I trust the source.

Please be aware that this is a REAL case which is on-going. You may be offended by some of the detail but Jade is living this hell.

*********************

If you read beyond this point, you will read the detail of Jade's alleged circumstances.

The Admin of Find Madeleine have not verified this information, However, it comes from a very reliable source. Some phrases are cearly critical of Social Services. I am sure that we are all open-minded and willing to learn.

Take a deep breath!

Stay calm and safe, merly xxx

*********************

INFORMATION GIVEN TO ADMIN OF FIND MADELEINE

Jade is in Bristol in a slag den, her pimp drove her back to Romford last Sunday to collect one of her schoolfriends. Although the other girl had been warned she thought she could handle the situation, she ended up in the slag den in Bloy Street with Jade.

They were both beaten and the pimp tried to enforce a threesome when Jade wasn't being visited by other men.
As there was no food in the house they were both forced to go shoplifting for food.

Apparantly social workers called at the house on Thursday (we think) they asked to see Jade but were told that she had been thrown out, in fact both girls were in the bedroom and were beaten afterwards, the pimp had Jade by the throat and slammed her face into a door.

The girl is now back in Romford but will not go to the police because the pimp has said he will kill Jade if she does, her mum is going to take photographic evidence of her bruises.

The usual story in Bristol, social workers and police do not realise the seriousness of the situation.

That has literally just turned my stomach over reading that.

And to think the police once had Jade safe in their custody but had to let her go. Poor Jade, she's just a kid!

I hope she breaks free somehow or the police do a raid and grab her.

I need to go for a bit.

Why aren't the police doing anything?

I can not understand how police can be aware of her whereabouts and do nothing to get her out of there !! She is only a kid, only 15 years old....it is against her own will to be at this terrible place and what happens to her.
What kind of a law is this that police can not get this poor child out of this situation??!!

I am absolutely shocked.

Dear Logos,

I am so glad that you joined in this discussion.

I cannot answer your questions as I am only learning myself.

The current law does not appear to safe-guard our young teenagers. It is legislation that was written prior to the internet world......et al.

I am sure that Tamsin will provide us with some good reading links.

Take care, Merly

It is an evil world that we live in.

Jade's story is harrowing enough in itself but with the added problems that face families of exploited girls, it just makes life very hard to handle.

Social workers are getting ready to close the case, she is now 16 so they are not interested.

Police will only act if Jade herself makes a formal complaint (something she won't do because she has been told that unless she tows the line her family will be killed).

The family are liasing with Barnardos exploitation team in Bristol but they are facing a huge problem and are seriously swamped by the number of cases.

The internal sex trafficking department at the UKHTC in Sheffield has just one DS to deal with the whole country

CROP in Leeds are the main charity who support families of exploited girls, but they are a charity and do not have an endless supply of money, much as the work they do is amazing they cannot perform miracles.
Take a look at their website, it hasn't been updated for a while, but the priority is to protect and support real people.
www.crop1.org.uk

E-mail your local MP, ask them what they are doing about the problem in your area...and yes there will be a problem!
This is a national problem and although it does form clusters around Leeds and Blackburn it also happens in every corner of the country.

Sign the petition to number 10 Downing street set up by Gill, mum of Sammy (Samantha) Osborn who went missing last year.
http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/exploitedgirls/

Panorama showed a documentary last Thursday.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/programmes/panorama/default.stm
It was a clear explanation of the problem.

There is also a candle page for CROP.

This is exactly what I was going to post.

How often do we criticise other countries for not protecting their children, inferring that their laws must be archaic and yet our own laws are letting our own children down in exactly the same way.

I'm flabbergasted that this kind of thing is happening in this country in the 21st centuary.

As well as e-mails and letters I think the rest of the world needs informing that this kind of thing is going on.

It seems that society can respond to a very vulnerable toddler but not to a teenager who, in many ways, are as vulnerable as a younger child.

Thank you Merly for your welcome in this discusion....I still can not believe that this is going on...I am still in deep shock.

And I totaly agree with KarenJane with this :
Quote:

So in very simple words...a teenager can be kidnaped right at the doorstep of their own home, being kept against their own will....terrible things could happen to this child, but yet nobody has the right or the power to rescue our kids from such evil ? All you can do as a parent in this situation is wait and hope that the child makes a complaint at the next police station???? Hello ???!! What sort of a stupid law is this? Just apart from the fact that those very vulnerable girls ( and boys too ) are still kids and under 18...but even if they were older....they are definitely there against their own will and they know this...this sounds like, that as an adult, I could just grap a teenager and do what ever I like to him or her. Please correct me if I am wrong.....but Gee this gives me a shiver....the law needs to be changed, the world needs to be informed about this....What can WE as a forum do about this??

I am shocked and stunned! Surely this cannot be happening in this day and age. If the authorities know what is going on in a certain address can't they raid the place?? They do when they think it's trafficking from abroad!

If I were the parents I would hire some heavies to pose as customers to go in there and fetch her out. Also give the pimps some of their own medicine too.

Surely it's kidnapping?

What is happening to this country if we can't even protect our own children.

What does the local MP have to say??

Sorry - this post might seem a bit garbled - just typing as I think!

Gobsmacked and horrified!!

Surely if someone is being held against their will it is a crime no matter what age they are. I understand in this case Jade is too scared to complain. She is in a no-win situation but social workers would appear to know the danger she is in and therefore should be held responsible for her safety.

Could we not bombard the MP for the area in Bristol where she is supposed to be?

Or IF it didn't endanger her at all, what about getting onto a national newspaper??

This is terrible and shocking to read about poor Jade, I hate to imagine the situation she is in.

I am shocked too that this country fails to do anything about it. Where are our priorities with anything?

I think we would have to be careful there and work with her parents.

The parents of Jade ( and other girls, also in Bristol after being groomed) would be more than happy for you to lobby the local MP.

As both girls are currently in BS5 East Bristol the local MP is Kerry McCarthy, both sets of parents have been to visit her at Westminster.

Social workers have tried to close Jade's case as she is now 16,but due to a determined effort by the family they haven't yet done so.

Glad to hear that Tamsin so they are still responsible for her safety?
Do you think Jade's mum, or perhaps yourself, could make up some kind of template letter which we could all add signitures to ? We could change it slightly to make it more personal and then send it off to her MP and whoever else you think. We could pass it around the forums etc. to boost the numbers.

What is it with Bristol Tamsin? What kind of people are exploiting these youngsters?

Okay, I am back from taking little nephew to the North East to stay with his gran. (His Mummy had a tooth absess and couldn't keep to the planned arrangements so I stepped in at the last minute. I did have a lovely time with little nephew and my mum yesterday - so that is the positive bit.)

Would you like me to draft a letter for the forum - and you can copy and change into your own words. (It is always better if it doesn't look like a template even if it is.....you can add your own paragraphs or edit into the way that you would say it.)

Let me know and I'll post a draft this evening if you want it.

I am fully behind Tamsin on this matter - we need to bombard the Bristol MP.

I would also say that we should send a copy of our e-mail to our own MP as this is a national problem. I could write an additional paragraph to turn it into a local enquiry for your own MP also.

Do you want me to do this?

Welcome back Merly.
That sounds to me like a good plan!

You are so good with words and that would be something positive that we as a forum can do together. I'm in, what do others think?

Just a quick thought but this needs to be brought to the nations attention. Jeremy Vine on Radio 2 is asking people to ring in with their stories. Perhaps the family could approach the programme. This would put extra pressure on the MP's and social services, authorities etc.

No doubt if he decided to put this in his programme he would have the service and MP on.

His programmes are always thorough and he doesn't mince his words.

He is a father of young children and where kids are concerned he really tries to get to the bottom of things.

Perhaps somebody could suggest this to the family.

Merly that sounds great, thank you,

Interesting article in the Daily Mail 27th March to coincide with Panorama which went out the same day.

Lovely idea hippy, but we have to bear in mind this is an ongoing live situation and if her family speak out on radio, it could put Jade at risk.

DRAFT LETTER TO MPs

Dear

CONTROL AND PIMPING OF OUR YOUNG TEENAGERS

JADE MERRITT AND SAMMY OSBORN

I am a member of a forum which was formed after the disappearance of Madeleine McCann. Through membership of this forum I have learned about a number of missing children cases. There are two that concern me greatly: Jade Merrit and Sammy Osborn.

Both of these young people were 15 years old when they were allegedly groomed on the internet. Now that they are 16 years old, the law prevents their parents, the police service and social services from rescuing them from the males who hold them in captivity.

The sexual grooming of our young females is a reality in our society and we need to address this. Can I draw your attention to this Daily Mail article:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/femail/article.html?in_article_id=546809&in_page_id=1879

Panorama showed a documentary last Thursday which was a clear explanation of the problem.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/programmes/panorama/default.stm

I believe that Jade Merrit and her friend are in a precarious position at this moment in time and are in threat of their lives. I would ask you to use your best endeavours to prevail on the Bristol police service to remove Jade and her friend from their present environment and make sure that they are safe.

I believe that you are aware of both cases. The police have no jurisdiction to remove Jade and her friend because they are both over the age of 16 years. The police are not able to remove Sammy Osborn either - for the same reasons. Are you waiting for a murder before you react to this ever-growing problem of internet-grooming and pimping?

Jade Louise Merrit has been asking for assistance (via telephone calls to her parents) for a number of weeks. I understand that she is fearful for her own life and that of her friend and her family.

It is important that you stand up NOW and assist Jade and her friend, as well as Sammy Osborn to be released from the clutches of their male pimps.

If necessary, ask that the police to detain Jade and her friend under the Mental Health Act

http://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/information/mental-health-a-z/mental-capacity-act-2005/

Please consider what you can do as a member of Parliament. We have little time to get Jade and her friend, and Sammy Osborn out of their life-threatening environments. If this was your daughter - what would you do now?

I am asking you to save Sammy, Jade and her friend. This will need a very pro-active response rather than a literal response by letter.

Thank you for your attention. I now look forward to a very positive response which indicates that you assisted in saving these young people.

Yours faithfully,

I wonder if she has a nickname from her childhood that only she or her close family would know.

I really hope they save this precious child. No child should have to go through this.

Wow merly, you really do write a good letter.

Just a few alterations though, Jade wasn't groomed on the net but face to face in Romford, also her friend is now back in Romford at home, Jade and Sammy remain in Bristol in the BS5 area.

Thanks.

Received this reply from Ms McCarthy

RE: Children In Danger‏
From: MCCARTHY, Kerry (MCCARTHYK@parliament.uk)
Sent: 01 April 2008 19:54:44

To: Thanks you for your email. I cannot, for reasons of confidentiality, discuss these cases with a third party but please be assured that I am doing all I can to help the parents. I am currently trying to set up a meeting with local police and social services, and the parents, in the very near future so we can discuss what can be done. I am sorry I cannot share any more information with you.

Done!

Message sent to Jeremy Vine:

Young Females - groomed on the internet and held in captivity

I would like you to address this story. We as a society are losing far too many of our young females to internet Pimps. If they are hidden until they are aged 16 years the parents, police and social services cannot do anything to recover them. I believe that they are in danger of their lives. Please help us to save the lives of Sammy Osborn, Jade Merritt and her friend.

Thank you.

Pam, what she has said is that she can only take up matters FOR her constituents. We are contacting her on behalf of her constituents - the Merritt and Osborn families. We are not asking her to do anything for us.

It is also useful to signal the high level of interest in these cases, and the support for the families.

doing all I can to help the parents. I am currently trying to set up a
meeting with local police and social services, and the parents, in the

I hope so Pam - MPs like to pick up 'high profile cases'. The more members who can send an e-mail the better.

I know EWE2 sent one, I have......anyone else?

Just got off the phone to Emma at Missing people.

Jade has been recorded as 'returned home'.

I have asked that they note that she is still missing (although we know that Jade DID return home for 48 hours). Jade is still missing and in danger.

Someone from Missing People is going to phone me on Monday. If anyone needs to advise me on this case - please PM.

Dear Pam,

Can you post a link to this thread tomorrow and ask members to send a version of the draft e-mail? (Tezza and I have both done reminders).

I am sure that the social pressure will make a difference to Jade and Sammy.

TEMPLATE E-MAIL FROM FOR MADELEINE:

Here is a slightly amended template for sending to johnsona@parliament.uk head of the Department of health (although of course amend as you see fit or pen your own if you prefer)

DRAFT LETTER

Dear Mr Johnson

URGENT ASSISTANCE TO STOP PIMPING OF OUR YOUNG TEENAGERS

JADE MERRITT AND SAMMY OSBORN

I am asking for urgent assistance for two missing teenagers and their families. I believe that you are aware of both cases. Both of these young people were 15 years old when they were allegedly groomed by older men: Sammy on the internet and Jade face-to-face. Now that they are 16 years old, the law prevents their parents, the police service and social services from rescuing them from the males who hold them in captivity in the BS5 area of Bristol.

The sexual grooming of our young females is a reality in our society and we need to address this. Can I draw your attention to this Daily Mail article?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/fe....in_page_id=1879

Panorama showed a documentary last Thursday which was a clear explanation of the problem.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/programmes/panorama/default.stm

I believe that Jade Merrit is in a precarious position at this moment in time and is in threat of her life. I would ask you to use your best endeavours to prevail on the Bristol police service to remove Jade from her present environment and make sure that she is safe.

The police have no jurisdiction to remove neither Jade Merritt nor Sammy Osborn from their dangerous environments because they are now 16 years old. It seems unless there is a murder no one can or will react to this ever-growing problem of internet-grooming and pimping?

Jade Louise Merrit has been asking for assistance (via telephone calls to her parents) for a number of weeks. I understand that she is fearful for her own life and her family.

It is important that you stand up NOW and assist Jade Merritt and Sammy Osborn to be released from the clutches of their male pimps.

Please consider what you can do as a member of Parliament. We have little time to get Jade Merritt and Sammy Osborn out of their life-threatening environments. If this was your daughter - what would you do now?

Thank you for your attention. I now look forward to a very positive response which indicates that you assisted in saving these young people.

Yours faithfully.

I have received a response from Graham Brady (I asked him to support Kerry McCarthy regarding Jade and to pursue the wider issue of grooming and exploitation of our teenagers):

From: "CROWTHER, Sybil" <CROWTHERS>

Dear ****

Mr Brady is today travelling up to [the North West] for the recess, but to save any further delay, he has asked me to thank you for your e.mail and Mr Brady has approached the Home Office minister relating to your concerns. When Mr Brady receives a response he will of course write to you again.

Best wishes.

Thanks for this Merly.

If you think this message isn't appropriate please movee. On Missing Live during the week, a presenter quoted out of 100,000 plus people who go missing in UK every year, 11,000 are sexually abused. I was very shocked at this figure and feel the public should know and may act a whole lot quicker if they were aware of facts. Can someone check this figure out for further confirmation?

Tamsin, you too must feel very proud.

I second that tezza, the people here have been fantastic

The Bristol MP is now very aware of the problems associated with sexual exploitation and is investigating the problems faced by parents and the authorities alike.

There was an interesting article by Vernon Coaker last week for those who are interested

E-mail sent to Sybil Crowthers (Secretary to Graham Brady) - 17th May 2008

Dear Sybil

Please will you thank Graham Brady for his support in referring my concerns regarding teenage exploitation to the Home Office. I was so pleased to see that he took my concerns seriously and referred the matter to Vernon Coaker.

I was also satisfied with Vernon Coaker's response (which you sent to me on Graham's behalf) and, in particular, the fact that he indicated that he had forwarded my letter to CEOP.

I am writing on this occasion to let you know that one of the young people (Jade Merritt) is now back home with her family. Vernon Coaker has authored an interesting article on the subject of teenage exploitation (9th May 2008):

http://www.egovmonitor.com/node/18733

We must always remain vigilant about the potential exploitation of our young people.

Please convey my thanks to Graham for his help and support on this matter.

Yours sincerely,

Is it possible that Jade's thread can be temporarily removed or blocked so that it can't be read,

A strange request I know, but the case will be coming to court in a few months and I would hate any public detail getting into the wrong hands and causing problems for the prosecutors,
The scum has to go down!!!!

thanks

No problem Tezza.

A wise decision under the circumstances.

News from Bristol.

The man involved in Jade's case has today been found guilty of various charges. He has been given a custodial sentence of15 months, 7 yrs on sex offenders register and no longer allowed to see his kids unless under supervision and placed on the sex offenders register for the next 7 years.

Thanks to one very brave young lady there is one less perpetrator on the streets.
