International Missing Children's Day 25 May 2010

Missing People, the proud UK member of Missing Children Europe -the European Federation for Missing and Sexually Exploited Children – joins 21 other NGOs, active in the against the disappearance and sexual exploitation of children in 15 countries of the European Union, in recognising International Missing Children’s Day.

Each year on International Missing Children’s Day, Missing Children Europe encourages people to think about all the children who have been reported missing in Europe and around the world and to spread a message of hope and solidarity on an international scale to parents without any news of their children.

Background

On May 25, 1979, six-year-old Etan Patz went missing in New York. He was never seen again. Over the following years, different organisations began to highlight this date, but it was not until 1983 that the President of the United States declared May 25 ‘Missing Children's Day’.

Purpose

To raise awareness about all the children who have been reported missing in Europe
To spread a message of hope to families without any news of their missing child
To highlight prevention strategies

How you can help

In recognition of International Missing Children’s Day, Missing People is asking you to help us carry on the search for the thousands of missing children from the UK.

You can help us mark this special day in 2009 by making a donation, by organising a fundraising event or by asking your company to join us as one of our poster partners around the country, all of whom help to display posters of missing children as a part of our search and publicity efforts.

The ways you and your friends or your colleagues can fundraise are endless and we are always ready to help with ideas, to help promote your fundraising to the local media (if you want us too) and to offer some friendly support. Small amounts really do make a difference. £50 would enable us to answer five calls from vulnerable missing children asking for help. Click here to download our fundraising pack.

The support of your company by displaying posters would mean that we are able to get information on vulnerable missing people into the public domain quickly and efficiently. And it works. Last year nearly 80% of the cases we publicised were subsequently found. Our poster partners make this possible.
