Missing british teenager, Max Sumner, found dead in Tenerife

A British teenager has gone missing while on holiday in Tenerife, the Foreign Office has said.

The 17-year-old was reported missing after failing to return to his hotel in the resort of Playa de las Americas, in the south of the island.

A newspaper has said the teenager was murdered and his body found on waste ground close to the hotel where he had been staying with friends.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "We can confirm a 17-year-old British male went missing in Tenerife on September 4 and we are providing consular assistance."

Hols teen in death riddle

Police were last night probing the death of a British teenager while on holiday in Tenerife.

Max Sumner, 17, was reported missing by worried friends after a night out in the resort of Playa de las Americas.

He told the others he wanted to walk alone but did not return. Max, from the East Midlands, was found dead in a gully on Friday with injuries to his head and chest.

Police are awaiting a post mortem report but said: "There is nothing to indicate this is other than a tragic accident."

The Argus

7th September 2008

A teenager has died while on a holiday with friends in Tenerife.

The body of Max Sumner was found in an area of wasteland close to his hotel on the Canary island.

It is believed the 17-year-old, from Worthing, fell to his death after taking a short-cut back to his hotel following a night out in the popular resort of Playa de Las Americas in southern Tenerife.

Staff at the cafe in Marks and Spencer in Montague Street, Worthing, where Max worked, are said to be shocked and upset by the tragedy.

Friend Chris Stribblehill posted on the social networking site Facebook: “It is terribly sad. He was so young, I can’t stop thinking about it.”

Another colleague Michelle Harris said on the site: “It’s just so sad and unfair. I really feel for his parents.”

His friends reported Max missing after he failed to arrive back at their shared accommodation on Thursday.

A passer-by found his body around 10am the next day, according to local media reports.

Police initially launched a murder investigation but have since ruled out foul play.

Yesterday his family, who live in Stanley Road, Worthing, were too upset to talk about the tragedy.

It is believed Max was split up from his friends during the night out and wandered off alone.

One friend said: “It was a tragic accident."

Playa de Las Americas is a popular holiday destination for young people.

Max, said to be a talented footballer, was found in a riverbed called Barranco de Troya, an area near to the main resort nightlife.

He had suffered major head and chest injuries and a full post-mortem is to be carried out by the Institute of Legal Medicine, in Santa Cruz, Tenerife.

Police on the island are handling the case although Sussex Police have offered help in a bid to fully establish Max’s last movements.

A spokesman for the force said: “We have delivered the news to his family but we are not involved in the investigation at this stage, though we might be at a later date.”

It is believed that the teenager’s family flew to the island after he was reported missing.

A spokeswoman for the Foreign Office confirmed they were offering consular assistance to Max's family.

Worthing teenager in Tenerife tragedy: Father tells of 'my fun-loving son'

THE father of a teenage football fanatic who died in a tragic accident in Tenerife has paid tribute to his "fun-loving" and "popular" son.

Max Sumner, 17, died less than 24 hours after jetting out to the resort of Playa de las Americas with three friends on September 2, for his first holiday without his family.

His dad, Mark Sumner, said Max paid for the holiday himself and had been looking forward to it for months.

Mark, 49, of Ripley Road, Worthing, said: "Max was just tremendous fun.

Happy-go-lucky

"He was really popular and I think that was reflected at his funeral where it was standing room only.

"He was outgoing and happy-go-lucky, very much a people person.

"He has left a huge hole and our house is just so quiet and empty without him."

Max, known to friends as Teeks, had worked at Marks and Spencer in Montague Street, Worthing, since February.

Travel plans

Before that, he had studied briefly at Worthing College, but decided to take a break from education to consider his options.

Prior to that, he attended Lyndhurst First School, Chesswood Middle School and Worthing High School.

Mark said: "He had been looking into the possibility of travelling, maybe to America, but he was quite energised by the idea of doing volunteer work.

"He felt very passionately about helping to do something about third world poverty, so for this reason we asked anyone wanting to give donations in his memory to Oxfam."

Football fan

Another of Max's big passions was football, which he had played since he was five.

Over the years, he played for the Worthing Rebels, Thistle Youth FC and Worthing United.

Most recently he played for Worthing Dynamos.

Max's body was discovered on waste ground, just 250 yards from his hotel, on the morning of September 5.

Separated from friends

Mark flew out to Tenerife shortly after this, on a flight he had arranged before learning of Max's death with the plan of going to search for him.

While there, he read police reports on the case and said it seemed Max had become separated from his friends after a night out.

He said: "I think he got confused on the way back, because instead of going straight he took a left turn.

"It was pitch-dark and he fell down a 12 metre drop. I saw the photos and he didn't stand a chance.

Accidental

"Health and safety is different there, and there were no safety barriers or fences.

"In this country you would never see an uneven area of ground like this so close to the main area of town.

"We may never know exactly what happened, but the police report said it was an accident and we believe that."

The three friends Max had travelled to Tenerife with reported him missing after he failed to return to their hotel on September 3. He had known all of them since school.

Tough times

Mark said: "For three young lads to have their friend die on holiday must be very tough.

"I'm sure it will take them a while to get over it."

The friends joined around 400 others at Max's funeral at Worthing Crematorium on Friday.

Mark said the family, including Max's mother Nik, 46, and sister Amie, 25, were keen to make it a service that reflected his young age.

Tributes

Because of this, Mark said there was lots of music during the ceremony. A family friend read a poem, and Mark and Amie both gave tributes to Max.

Mark said: "It all just seems so cruel because he was so young.

"We miss him so terribly. We were so proud of him.

"He made us so happy and we just have to hang on to those happy memories. He will be forever young to us."
