Irish Mother Shares McCanns' Grief

With Kate and Gerry McCann back home from Portugal without their daughter Madeleine, Ann Boyle is a mother who feels their pain more than most.

Ann's daughter Mary went missing in 1977 in her native County Donegal - and has never been seen since.


The family had travelled to see Ann's parents in Cashelard for the St Patrick's Day weekend. Mary was running an errand with her uncle when she decided to turn back half way. It was the last time she was seen.

A major search was mounted for the six-year-old in the remote south Donegal countryside, but after a fruitless two-months Ann and her husband Charlie had to make the agonising decision to scale down the search and return to their home 50 miles away.

"It was the longest 50 miles of my life," recalls Mrs Boyle. "We did put it off for a good while, but eventually Charlie said we'll have to go.

"We had two other children and it was important for us to get the family together again.
